An acrylic painting of Kinkakuji, the Golden Temple in Kyoto, Japan. I completed this painting shortly after returning from my first trip to Japan and it remains one of my favourites, if only because of the memories it evokes for me.
A reproduction, in acrylics, of a Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, c.1845. According to Japanese myth, Minamoto no Yorimasa shot down the beast, nuye, from above the imperial palace with a single arrow and was rewarded with a sword by the emperor Konoe. Nuye is not shown in this image as the focus is on Yorimasa's focus and determination. Nuye was supposedly a beast with a monkey's head, the body of a badger, the legs of a tiger, a snake's tail and the calling sound of a golden mountain thrush.
The term 'vanitas' is latin for 'emptiness' and was used primarily by artists from the north of Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It refers to the transience of life and the hopelessness of human endeavour. This work was an exercise in still life painting in a style inspired by Paul Cezanne and the late Impressionists.
